Rolex placed a large order for El Primero movements, which got the brand back in business. As a result, Zenith also started producing their own El Primero-powered models by the late 1980s. The Entry Point - This Zenith Clipper El Primero Chronograph ref.Zenith's version of the Cosmograph one that totally fits the aesthetic of the 1980s Chronograph hype with its bi-color case. The Zenith Clipper El Primero ref. 19.0120.400 has all the hallmarks of an extravagant eighties design. The watch features a deep micron gold plated case with a stainless steel bezel. As you can see, the bezel actually gives the watch a lot of its character.
While it definitely is a exquisite element, the overall aesthetic fits the iconic 1980s/90's chronographs that made it big at the time. This watch was first introduced in 1988.This introduction model featured a black lacquered dial with silvered sub-dials and white baton-style hands. Inside the watch, Zenith used the new El Primero Caliber 400. It is the evolution of the old El Primero 3019 that was produced until 1975 when Zenith watchmaker Charles Vermot decided to hide all the important documentation and tools and machinery when production of the El Primero movements was halted by management. The new version of the movement operates at 36,000vph, features 30 jewels.
Flying under the radar the Zenith Clipper El Primero is a watch that is undervalued, understated and a sleeper in my opinion resulting in not a lot of information on the model line out there. This is an opportunity to add an affordable El Primero chronograph to your collection, this might be the perfect option. This watch has been tested for 1 week and is in excellent working order along with the stop watch and chronograph's. Keeping accurate time and date.
